Product Description
A very fine sterling suite of Monteith with matching tazzas, with engraved Chinoiserie decoration, by L & A Chricton, London 1915-17.
The Monteith was the earliest form of punch bowl, which first appeared in the late 17th century, reputedly named after a Scottish noble, The notched rim, sometimes detachable, is shaped to hold the foot of a glass or cup.
It was at about the same time that Chinese inspired decoration made its greatest impact on English society, inspiring, not only, silversmiths, but artists in the entire decorative field.
Chricton Brothers was a reputable firm of silversmiths with an international following, especially in the USA, where they maintained a branch for several years. In fact each piece is stamped " Chricton Brothers, London & New York".
Impeccable condition. All detail crisp and clear. No monogram. Fully hallmarked.
Dimensions: Bowl: 6.5" high, 10.5" diameter. Tazzas 2.5" high, 8" diameter. Total weight 68.5 Troy oz.
