Product Description
Here is a beautifully carved deep-relief agate cameo of a Greek/Roman goddess, as the Romans inherited the Greek gods/goddesses and renamed them. She is most probably Athena (Roman Minerva). Although she is often depicted wearing a helmet, other portrayals of her exude her more feminine side. After all she was the goddess of warriors, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, crafts and music.
Cameos were often carved in Italy and exported unmounted. They were then framed in the host country, America, in this case.
The cameo is in wonderful condition, still retaining that faultless skin texture. Difficult to believe that it was carved out of a rock.
The frame too is in good condition, apart from a few places where the edges have been slightly depressed.
Diameter: 1.8".
