A late 18th century 3 piece coin silver tea service with engraved decoration and beading to rim and foot.
The teapot is oval with straight sides, straight tapered spout and a domed lid terminating in an urn-shaped finial. The finial has had a reinforcement, pictured, added at some time in its history.
The sugar bowl is urn shaped, on an oval foot with a similar domed lid terminating in an urn-shaped finial.
The creamer is urn shaped, on an oval foot with an exaggerated loop handle. The handle has had an early repair where it meets the rim, pictured.
The teapot is hallmarked with silversmiths' marks, Andras & Richards and Alexander & Riker, both firms working in New York c.1797. There are also stamped two devices and NYork.
The sugar and creamer are unmarked
Each piece has an engraved cartouche with the monogram JED.
There is no doubt that three pieces are made by the same silversmith(s) and therefore constitute a set. The repairs, in my opinion, are a minor consideration in view of the rarity of 18th century American coin tea sets.
