Product Description

A fabulous late 17th century covered porringer, of Britannia Standard silver, by Samuel Smith, London 1699.
The William, including the William & Mary, period can be considered a transitional stage when porringers, both covered and uncovered, approached the form of two-handled cups.
The decoration is typical of that period, curved flutes, beaded handles and a ball finial.
Although it was a popular item then it is rare to find one in this condition.
The Britannia Standard, 95.8% pure silver, was introduced in March 1697 and remained in force as the legal standard until 1719 when it reverted to the Sterling Standard, 92.5% pure, although the Britannia Standard continued to be used as an option up to the present day.
During this period the Date Letter changed consecutively on 19th May of each year, which was celebrated as St Dunstan's Day. St Dunstan was the patron saint of Goldsmiths and Silversmiths.
So the date of manufacture, or assay, of this porringer could be any time from 19th May 1699 to 18th May 1700.
I do not have a lot of information on Samuel Smith except that he completed his apprenticeship and entered his mark in 1700. So this porringer is one of his earlier masterpieces.
In very good condition. Fully and clearly hallmarked, as pictured, on the body on on the lid.
Dimensions: 8.25” high, 9.75” across handles. Weight: 32 troy oz.
